California newts (Taricha torosa) aggregate in the muddy nutrient rich waters of a cattle pond. The newts breed and lay eggs in the shallows while other newts sneak in and attempt to devour freshly laid eggs. The newt behind this pair has a mouthful of eggs that it is unable to swallow due to the gelatinous cover which lumps them together. Thus smaller clutches are at greater risk as they are easier to swallow.

The newts that lay the eggs spend some time holding onto them with their back legs. Perhaps allowing them to absorb water and swell (making them a tough target to swallow) prior to leaving them alone and vulnerable.
