    The Amazon Basin emerald tree boa (Corallus batesii) is a stunning snake that inhabits the rainforest canopy only rarely descending to ground level.  It is said by some to be the prettiest snake species.
    The South American tapir (Tapirus terrestris), the largest terrestrial mammal of the Amazon basin.  This makes it a frequent target of poaching for its meat.
