    A California newt in a eutrophying cattle pond.  The newt sits at the edge and gulps oxygen from the surface.
    California Drought
    The 1st rains mean life for rough skinned california newts (Taricha granulosa) like this one who waited out the dry months in a rapidly shrinking cattle pond which eventually vanished leaving only mud cracks to hide in.  Many other newts died but this individual was among the survivors.
