An endangered Santa Cruz long toed salamander (Ambystoma macrodactylum croceum) covered in UV fluorescent powder which will help scientists track it. The powder is safe and non toxic for amphibs and as the salamander crawls it will smudge and leave behind evidence of its passing. In turn researchers will follow the trail and see where the salamander goes once it leaves the immediate vicinity of the pond it grew up in. This data will shed light on what kind of habitats these salamanders need and how they utilize the landscape - which will hopefully in turn inform conservation decisions in future.
