A male bobcat (Lynx rufus) gingerly removes the intestines from a captured gopher.
Mt. Diablo fairy-lantern (Calochortus pulchellus) also known as the Mount Diablo globelily is a rare wildflower that only grows in the vicinity of Mt Diablo in the East Bay of California.
The Tiburon mariposa lily (Calochortus tiburonensis) is a rare and endangered flower found only a single hill in the San Francisco Bay area. This single site where it occurs is surrounded by developed areas for housing and recreation but the ridge where it grows is protected and maintained by Marin county open space district. Despite being so near San Francisco this species was only described in 1973, its small distribution and the fact that it only flowers for a few weeks each year may explain how it remained unknown for so long.
