A cluster of overwintering monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) in Santa Cruz county. In 2020, a count in November registered less than 2000 individuals, down from 300,000 a few years ago, and many millions decades ago. Experts fear that they may vanish entirely and soon. We can try to help them by planting native nectar plants and conserving habitat. Hopefully this was not one of the last years of the monarch aggregations in Santa Cruz.
A male Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna), these are the most common hummingbirds on the west coast and are one of the minority of bird species that have done well for themselves in recent decades. They have been able to expand their range and increase their population as human modified habitat and gardens provide sustenance to them in areas they formerly were not found in.
The tule goose (Anser albifrons elgasi) the largest subspecies of Greater white-fronted goose winters only in the Sacramento Valley of California. Here a goose peeks over the tall grass in Sacramento National Wildlife refuge.
